As I was searching the web for some current paranormal news I stumbled upon a story that was sent in to Stephen Wagner of Paranormal.About.com referring to an incident in August of 2007 that left a group of individuals shaken and maybe even cursed from what they have witnessed. They claim they have met the infamous Mothman in Ontario, Canada.
Here is that story:
During August of 2007 in Ontario, Canada, my nephews and I where taking a walk behind the hill across the street. We started to smell a strong smell that smelled almost like something had died. My nephews kept complaining about the smell. We had never experienced the smell before or when we had just began walking.
Then we heard a loud rustling sound in the tall grasses behind us. It had scared me, but what scared me even more was the large, bright red eyes that had been staring at me and what I was now staring face-to-face with. The creature was about seven feet tall, black shiny skin that looked like a bat’s, long arms that reached almost to the ground, and a wingspan of about eight feet wide. I yelled for my nephews to run, but they seemed to be in some sort of trance and would not move. It let out a loud blood-curdling screech. That made my nephew cry. I pushed them foreword to start running and I ran after them. My nephew tripped and hurt his leg, so I had to carry him.
When we got home, my mother asked me why we had been back so early. After I had explained what had happened, she called the police. The police did not believe us and decided to ignore our call. After things had died down a little that night, I heard a scratching sound on the window in the living room. I went to see what it was and it was the tall, dark creature peering in my living room window. I yelled for it to leave, but it just stood there. I went into the kitchen to get a knife to try to threaten it away, but then I heard that unforgettable screech and the sound of large flapping wings. I had thought the creature was mocking of us and how I wanted it to leave.
Two weeks after the occurrence, our house had burned down. Perhaps it was an angel — or Mothman — trying to give us warning of what was going to happen to us.

Hey, I’m doing some research on the mothman sightings world wide to try and find some kind of commonality to the sightings. (other than the disasters) my theory is that there is something else at play here, there has got to be. Almost every eye witness account of the first person in any given area to see it (that I’ve come across) seem to have a similar story: they see it the first time remarkably close up, then a few more times from a distance, and then finally right outside they’re residence. Ms.Scarberry claims that the thing could have hurt her numerous times if had wanted to, but didn’t, She among others even think it was trying to communicate with them, which in it’s self is astonishing and unheard of with any cryptic sighting ever recorded. My hope is to uncover enough info so that I can track it, and hopefully find the commonality of the first sightings in an area so that I can predict the next area it will visit to make an attempt at communication. What has been stopping these witnesses from doing so is fear of the unknown, which is understandable, but I think if it wanted to hurt us it would have done so. and as far as the disaster sightings…I think it’s trying to stop them. My theory is: it’s an alien being, and it has a sort of intuition about these things. The “fact” backing my theory is an obscure photo sent to me by the son of a NASA astronomical and paranormal researcher, (which he copied from his fathers laptop apparently) of a figure underneath one of the planes that hit the trade center. the photo is very distant but the figure is positioned in a way that it seems as though he is holding the plane up, or pushing against it. Obviously the photo may be a fake, but there are about 18 other unrelated photos floating around on the internet of a flying figure around the towers in the aftermath of 9/11. Well I see that you are extremely motivated with the strange being known as the Mothman. Unfortunately most encounters of this so called creature are told next to campfires and by the time it gets to any media source, like most stories, info seems to be stretched out to form a more frightful vision. I wish you all the luck in the world with your research, but I will inform you that all you may receive is personal “shrewd” encounters with something that was shadowy and had wings…
Of course if you do ever find any evidence or photos of the beast, I would love to examine them myself to offer you an honest opinion.

There is a theory, Jaques Vallee was one of the originators, that Earth has had this unseen/unknown intelligence, a jokester if you will, that is behind sightings like mothman, ufos, etc since the beginning of time. All the weird things that defy science. He thinks they pop in and out from another dimension.
The late Mac Tonnies came to the same conclusion in his recent book The Cryptoterrestrials about the aliens doing abductions.
Lastly, the same type of phenomena may account for all the very weird stuff science could not explain at the Skinwalker Ranch as depicted in the book The Hunt For The Skinwalker.
My Grandfather and 2 other men saw the Mothman back in the 1950s in Ottawa. It was a family story which none of us knew was about a “Mothman” until I ran across a teaching activity that mentioned both the name and description. I Googled the name and discovered many people had seen it. My Grandfather and the others never told anyone other than close family as they thought they’d lose their jobs for being crazy. I read the description of the Mothman from a police report I found on-line to my father and he said that’s what Dad saw! I then explain where I found it and that others had seen it too. Looking back now I see many cultures have similar creatures in their mythology. I don’t know what they are, but the one my Grandfather saw was not friendly.
I am currently reading ‘The Mothman Prophecies” by John A. Keel, and not to say that I am any kind of expert on the topic, but from what I know of this incredibly interesting and mind-boggling phenomena leaves me skeptical of Mr. Purchase’s particular story. If it is, in fact, based on a factual case, than I apologize, but from my experiences with the ever-elusive internet I must always remain skeptical of such topics. Although I would like to point out that I am in no way denying the existence of such a creature, I am actually quite fascinated by it. Its just hard to find any kind of reliable information on the internet, media, or even in literature.
